Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) Subcommittee

In 2006, the Probation Department received a three-year grant from the California Corrections Standards Authority to review issues related to disproportionate minority contact (DMC) within the Los Angeles juvenile justice system. The grant provided funding for an expert consultant to help the Probation Department define the nature and extent of DMC; conduct trainings with Probation staff on action steps to reduce DMC at contact/decision points influenced by the department; and engage other juvenile justice system stakeholders to develop a long-term, system-wide plan to eliminate DMC. The project will be conducted in three phases, each phase lasting one year.

A DMC Subcommittee was formed under CCJCC to assist the Probation Department on this project. Headed by the Probation Department, the subcommittee includes representatives from the District Attorney’s Office, Juvenile Court, Juvenile Panel Attorneys, Los Angeles County Police Chiefs Association, Los Angeles Police Department, Public Defender’s Office, and Sheriff’s Department.
